HYDRATION

It’s a challenge to stay hydrated in Florida in the summer time! I should know, I walk up to 5 miles a day in this heat and it’s absolutely scorching out there this summer! I also do my own yard work and geez, it’s HOT out there! Anyway, I just thought I’d write up a quick post with some fun links and some good information about staying hydrated.

Ever wonder why watermelon is so popular in the summer time? Well, partially it’s because it’s in season right now, but it’s also because it’s INCREDIBLY hydrating! Definitely pick up some locally grown water melon today and enjoy as much as you want, it’s almost calorie free and so very good for you, in this heat.

Remember that coffee, tea, soda and alcohol actually DEHYDRATE you, so if you’re out in the hot sun AND drinking the wrong fluids….in can wreak havoc on your body!

Do you know that dehydration can actually cause you to crave salty, greasy food? You may not have heard that before, but when the body goes into a state of dehydration, it enters survival mode, heavy fats and salt help us hold on to water, so the body thinks that’s what we need! Of course, what we really need is water, magnesium, potassium, and maybe just a little salt. So, if you’re having intense cravings for unhealthy food, like fast food, try drinking more water!

Some other signs that you may need more hydration include fatigue, brain fog, headaches, difficulty concentrating, dizziness, and joint and muscle pain! Truthfully, I’ve been treating more calve pain, quad pain, and just leg pain in general since this heat began. If you’re experiencing chronic leg pain, try hydrating more, try taking magnesium everyday, here’s my favorite magnesium supplement, and finally, get acupuncture! We offer online scheduling right here.

Hydration is made up of more than water, and I think that’s an important thing to note. Water is key, of course, but we also need magnesium, a little salt, and potassium too, it’s part of the hydration process! Read this to see if you might be deficient in magnesium.

It’s never a bad idea to eat a banana after being outside in the heat, or an apricot! They’re in season right now, they’re delicious, and loaded with potassium. If you’re spending time out in this heat, make sure, you’re taking magnesium, eating some food with potassium, and you can also try adding just a pinch of sea salt into you water bottle each day.

One final note on hydration, I’m really anti plastic water bottle, for more reasons than I can count. A few important reasons include, they’re filled with chemicals, like BPA, that effect our hormone balance, and of course, they’re just horrible for the environment and recycling them isn’t the solution. Do you have a glass water bottle? I LOVE MINE, it’s so cute! You can check it out here, and pick any color!

In closing, I wish you a safe, happy and healthy summer! As we swing into August, it’s not going to get cooler, so make sure you’re taking the proper steps to take care of your body! HAPPY SUMMER!
